|Greenhouse production of orchids usually substitutes peat moss for bark mulch as a growing medium. It’s lighter, cheaper, and in the short term, holds a bit more water so production costs can be lowered. But tropical orchids don’t grow in peat moss, and when the moss does dry out, so does the orchid. Of course, bark mulch dries out as well.||Orchids are beautiful plants with outstanding blooms making them a popular choice. What a chipper probably would do is chip up large pine bark "nuggets". I don't know whether pine bark would be a good substitute for Douglas fir bark.||Orchid pots are primarily designed for great drainage. When plants are watered, excess moisture should be able to freely flow out of the orchid potting mix in a good container. It may seem like the water is flowing out of the container too quickly, faster than the roots can absorb it. This is normal activity for a great orchid container.|
